Today’s Orthodontic Braces

Orthodontics has come a long way from the days of heavy railroad tracks in your smile! In fact many of today’s braces are made from natural tooth-colored materials to provide patients with less noticeable alternatives to traditional braces. For those who want to make a statement with their smile, there are colors available to place on your braces.

Dr. Bruno has used Invisalign for more than 14 years. He reserves its use for those instances where the result will be equivalent to that achievable with braces. Invisalign is a super alternative for many patients but the predictability of the outcome is up to you. Invisalign aligners must be used for 24 hours per day with only short times out for eating or brushing. The saying around the office is “If you want them to work like braces, they need to be there like braces; 24/7!”  For more information on Invisalign, visit our Invisalign pages.

Colors on your braces?

We can do that; and many younger patients find it fun. There are some real advantages to using the most modern bracket system without color, but colors are available if you want them.  See Self-Ligating Brackets for more information.

Self-Ligating Brackets

Modern self-ligating brackets are available in metal or ceramic versions and do not require the ligature to hold the archwire into the bracket. This has several obvious advantages:

  • Easier to clean
  • Shorter appointment times
  • Longer intervals between appointments
  • Comfort
  • Shorter overall treatment times

We can place colored ligatures on the self-ligating brackets (just for fun), but colored elastic ligatures wear out after about 4 weeks so appointments must be more frequent and take longer. This eliminates some of your advantages from the more modern self-ligating bracket system. We can still arrive at a great smile, but treatment is less convenient for patients and parents. Teachers love the idea that modern systems keep kids in school more by requiring fewer appointments!

The self-ligating systems Dr. Bruno uses currently are GAC In-Ovation® R and In-Ovation® C
